VIDEO: Shamorie Ponds is Bringing Brooklyn Swagger to Queens
When Hall of Famer Chris Mullin took on the St. John’s head coaching position his top priority was to keep New York City’s best players home. He immediately hit the recruiting trail and landed in the East New York section of Brooklyn at Thomas Jefferson High School; the home of sweet-shooting lefty Shamorie Ponds. Mullins recruiting pitch to Ponds: “Be the next great lefty guard from Brooklyn to do special things at St. John’s.” Months later, Mullin and the staff got their guy.
What can we expect from Ponds in a Red Storm uniform? Well for starters, he’s a lights out shooter. He’s within range as soon as he steps foot into the gym. He’s from New York so of course he can dribble and once he passes his defender he can make the toughest layups like easy. Defensively, he has quick hands and great anticipation skills. Just last week he stole a late inbound pass and sunk the game-winning free throws in front of a raucous crowd on the road. They don’t call him “Slick” for nothing.
St. John’s get ready, help is on the way.
