Over the past six years, Columbia High School has dominated Class AAA with 4 state championships. The Eagles program not only is well respected in the State of Georgia but also has a great rapport nationally by playing in some of the top events in Bahamas, Hawaii, and Alaska.
Come December 26th, Columbia will play host to the Converse Invitational which has attracted some good out of state programs such as Meridian(MS), West Anchorage(AK), and Wenonah(AL).
“I was able to sit down with Converse in Hawaii and they were excited about the possibility of sponsoring a tournament in DeKalb,” McCrary said. We continued talks and I presented the plan to DeKalb Schools Associate Superintendent for Support Services Dr. Tim Freeman and Director of Athletics Ron Sebree who agreed to let us put on the tournament.”
Other participating schools include Tucker(GA), Martin Luther King Jr.(GA), Chamblee(GA), SW Dekalb(GA), Harrison(GA), Buford(GA), Eagle's Landing(GA), Meadowcreek(GA), South Gwinnett(GA), Crisp County(GA, Christian Life Academy(LA), Newton(MS), Norland(FL), and Butler(GA).
“The tournament being held here speaks volumes for the state of DeKalb County basketball,” said McCrary. “I’m really excited about the direction of basketball and athletics in general in DeKalb County.” McCrary says the ultimate goal for the tournament is to provide scholarships in the near future to aid athletes wanting to continue their education.
