Yesterday Morgan State University set the stage for the biggest matchup of the city; Patterson vs Dunbar. Patterson came into this game having beat several teams ranked higher than themselves or even with better records. Dunbar having only 3 losses in their resume had beaten Patterson once before in the regular season. Dunbar got major contributions from their seniors on the offensive end; Rodrick Harrison lead the team with 18 points, Evan Singletary chipped in with 16 points, Aaron Parham with 13, and Donte Pretlow with 10 points. But what ended up being the difference maker was their defense. The crime stopper was his normal self with a game high of 24 points, but his team fell to Dunbar 65-61. Congratulations to the Division 1 City Champion Dunbar Poets.

The Dunbar Poets start their playoff run next Tuesday (2/28) with a bye as they await the winner of the Southside Academy/Maritime Academy game. The Patterson Clippers look to rebound as they play Hereford in the first round of playoffs this Friday. Stay tuned, it's about to heat up!

Jai Lewis; Harford County Gem

It's almost March and you know what that means; March Madness! With that being said I figured I would take it back to my balling days just a bit. When I moved from Boston, I got situated in Harford County, Maryland. It would turn out to be a place that consisted of ballers that got slept on. It would turn out that nobody could sleep on Jai Lewis (Gary Neal-his teammate as well). Recently, we got with him to talk Harford County recruiting, his Final Four appearance with George Mason, and Gary Neal.

Courtcred: Tell us about when in high school you started to get D-1 looks and what made you choose George Mason?

Jai Lewis: I started get interest for basketball after my junior, when I started playing AAU basketball with Baltimore Select. But I started getting recruited hard when i attended prep school at Maine Central. I choose GMU because they had a lot of things in place to make sure i would excel on and off the floor. I also decided on Mason cause it was far enough but close enough from home.

Courtcred: There has been a a lot of talent to come out of Harford County why do you think that people sleep on it?

Jai Lewis: Yes, there has been a lot of talent to come out Harford county and there could have been so much more. The one major reason why i think the county is slept on is because there is no big time/named schools with exposure like the city schools. But if as long as the County school schedule to play a lot of city schools in the out conference schedule things will be fine.

Courtcred: Tell us about your experience of not only making the tourney but knocking teams out that you were "supposed" to lose to?

Jai Lewis: My experience from making the tourney and going on that run is something that will last a life time. From being an 11th seed and beating 3 teams that won the national tourney in the 3 past years of the 06 tourney in incredible. One thing in sports and in life no matter how big of an underdog you are there is always a chance.

Courtcred: What's different from playing in the states vs playing overseas?

Jai Lewis: The major thing in playing in the states than overseas is family. You are so many miles away from family and you are unable to just pick and go see them when you get a break like you would in the states. Playing overseas is basically learning how to adjust to different cultures and how things are done. But the basketball is pretty much the same.

Courtcred: Do you and Gary Neal (old teammates) still talk

Jai Lewis: Yes, Gary and I talk whenever we get a chance. We may send a twit or a facebook message here and there. Whenever we are home during the summer we do play and the same gyms so we get to chat about things going on in the world.

Courtcred: What's one word of advice you would give to those in Harford County that feel they will get overshadowed by the city?

Jai Lewis: I don't think i can say it in one word, but i would tell them just to advantage of the times you play the city schools cause you never know who is watching. Also to keep working at what you do and try to find ways to get the exposure that you want.

With the surprise return of Isaiah Whitehead. Lincoln looked poised to do what 55 other teams couldn't previously do. Beat St. Anthony. Not your ordinary non-conference game, despite a ferocious attempt in the end to upset the Friars, the scoreboard read: St Anthony 51 - Lincoln 45. Scrappy from start to finish, the Friars continue their win streak with two games left in the season before the playoffs. Coach Hurley will take a win over a loss, but he can't be happy with the way his team played in the fourth quarter, especially down the stretch. Their focus during games, even if they are ahead is crucial at this point of the season. Lincoln took advantage of the Friars' lack of intensity in the final minutes, thanks to a great team effort on defense. Ethan Telfair and Tafari Whittingham at times looked like a younger version of Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan. Telfair displayed his usual all-around point guard skills tallying 11 points and 8 assists. He knows how to control the pace of the game and he makes his teammates better. Great fight in the end for a Lincoln team building momentum. If this is the time when they are getting better and peaking on this season. With a healthy Whitehead, Telfair and Whittingham, Lincoln can be dangerous in the playoffs

Last Saturday was an ugly night due to the heavy rain we received in Atlanta but that didn't stop fans from coming out to see what could be the last high school matchup between two McDonald's All-Americans. Miller Grove's Tony Parker and SW Dekalb's Shaq Goodwin have been playing against each other for years and even played along side each other this past spring and summer. Even though they are both big men, Parker is clearly a center and Goodwin is a power forward. The two went into this region championship wanting to take home bragging rights. Goodwin and SW Dekalb stole the region championship from Miller Grove last year and it was the first time in the school history that they had not won their region championship.

Kris Jenkins; WCAC Player of the Year

A few days ago it was released that Kris Jenkins was the WCAC Player of the Year. You figure an easy selection right? According to some not really. I recently saw a forum from last week where folks were debating who they thought should get the WCAC Player of the Year. Some said Kris Jenkins, BeeJay Anya, James Robinson, Stan Robinson, others said Joe McDonald (Landon) just to name a few. I found it to be interesting as to what some were saying. Something that I thought would've been an easy selection was in fact something truly debatable. Some may make their decision based on the most wins, some on soring averages or overall stats, some on how the player responded to adversity, and some on the load they had to carry. I believe in order to accurately make a decision for this award you have to look at all of those factors. ONLY two players come to mind when I think of this; Kris Jenkins and Stan Robinson. Stan Robinson easily could've been selected for this award. He has lead the WCAC in scoring, his team is 18-0 within the conference, and even in his recent scoring slump he has still helped his team to pull out victories. One of the things that I saw on the forum was thal Paul VI (Stan Robinson) was basically a team that had numerous options. I can agree with that, as we saw Patrick Holloway hitting a game winner this season for them.

Kris Jenkins on the other hand was thrust into the position of being the team leader when UNC signee Nate Britt went down with an injury. Countless times when his team's back was up against the wall he came through; he his the game winning 3 pointer to overcome Aquille Carr's 36 point outing, a week later he lead his team to a victory of Dematha by 2 points (dropped 27), and lead his team to a 19-0 record once again putting his team on his big shoulders. Kris stands 6-6, 250 pounds and can shoot with the best of them. No wonder they call him the "big ticket." You can be sure that when Nate Britt came back he was thankful that his big man held it down as he did. With all that being said and done good job Kris, YOU DESERVE to be called the 2012 WCAC Player of the Year. I didnt even mention the fact that he is a junior. With it being clear who the leader of the team will be for next year he will only get better. I think we all can say it's safe to say his recruitment will go through the roof. Stay tuned for more from the "big ticket."

This has been one amazing year for the WCAC Conference. Some have said it's the toughest conference in the nation. I'd like to put my vote in for that. Reasons such as this; there have been so many buzzer beaters and last minute heroics that have kept fans glued their seats until the game clock stopped. Sunday afternoon was no disappointment when top team in the conference (Paul VI) faced the #2 team in the conference (Dematha). With this win Paul VI is 26-2 overall and 18-0 in the conference. Ironically, within the past 50 years, the only other team to have gone undefeated is Dematha. As you can imagine this was a very tight game and came down to the wire. Stan Robinson only scoring 9 points, came through big within the last 30 seconds of play. Missing a open layup he used his quick hops to tip in his own miss. If his shooting slump was an issue for visiting coaches, it had to be overlooked by his last minute heroics and ability to pull through when it's clutch. I was under the basket at UMBC tuned into the MIAA Conference Finals action up in Baltimore when a former teammate sent me a text alerting me that Paul VI's victory. Later on that night I was thrilled to see who had footage of the game. If you missed it, see the video below for highlights and interviews via Washington Post.

This past Sunday John Carroll faced Mt. St. Joe's. Mt. St. Joe's swept John Carroll during the regular season. If you think that wasnt enough to get John Carroll hyped up, just ask senior forward Jarred Jones. After beating St. Frances last week he tweeted this; "Got that win now we got some unfinished business on Sunday #repeat." Lead by his 15 points, 3 blocks, 5 rebounds and clutch free throws from freshman Justin Jenifer. John Carroll came out early ready to play and controlled the tempo the whole game. John Carroll came out defensive minded holding star Kameron Williams to just 5 points. Having said that Mt. St. Joe's hung in there throughout the game. Phil Lawrence threw one down on a John Carroll player in the 3rd quarter, cutting the lead 24-23. To close out the 3rd quarter guard Charlie Jones hit a buzzer beater. With under 7 minutes to play Mt. St. Joe's even took the lead for the first time in the game. Fueled by being beat twice, Jarred and his gang turned it up a notch. Their zone defense along with late free throws helped them to seal the win. Kameron WIlliams threw up a desperation 3 with seconds left, but fell short leadidng to a 44-41 victory.
