New NCAA Eligibility Rules

The NCAA has some new rules and if you are a high school athlete in the Class of 2016 or later, the academic requirements have risen. Below is a list of the new requirements that will affect student athletes starting with the Class of 2016.

	1. Complete 16 core courses (same distribution as in the past).

	2. Complete 10 of the core courses before your seventh semester of high school (senior year). Seven of the 10 courses must be in English, math or science. The 10 courses become "locked in" for the purpose of GPA calculation, meaning that you cannot repeat them after your senior year begins.

	3. Earn a minimum GPA of 2.30 in your 16 core courses. This rule didn't exist in the past.

	4. Meet the new sliding scale of GPA and SAT/ACT scores. The new scale increases GPA/test score requirements. For example, if you have a 2.50 GPA, you must score 1000 on the SAT or 85 on the ACT. Under the old rules, your 2.50 GPA required an 820 SAT or a 68 on the ACT.

	5. Graduate from high school. If you meet this and the other new requirements, you'll be a full qualifier at the NCAA Division I level, eligible to receive an athletic scholarship and compete during your first year of college.

If you haven't heard Sports Illustrated has done it again. The well known magazine has once again placed a high school baller in the spotlight for all to see. Chicago's Jabari Parker is the latest and only the sixth high school basketball player to grace the cover of SI, the others include Rick Mount(1966), Tom McMillen(1970), Kevin Garnett(1995), Lebron James(2002), and Sebastian Telfair(2004).

The 6'7 Parker is touted as the best player in the country and there's no argument here. He can do it all on both ends of the floor, all while sporting the "it" factor that makes kids stars. Off the court the Simeon Career Academy star has a pretty good story as well. The son of former NBA player Sunny Parker and a black Chicago kid that practices Morman faith. In the SI article Parker reveals that he is indeed considering taking his two year Morman mission despite the NBA being right at his door step.

The 2011-2012 Gatorade National Boys Player of the Year is coming off winning his third straight Chicago 4A State basketball championship and is currently competing in Nike's EYBL amongst other things this summer. Of course there are players in and around the basketball world that know of Parker, but the cover gives off instant crediability and expectations as Sports Illustrated reaches a weekly audience of 21 million viewers online, now the real pressure comes.

Brandon Randolph says west coast kids are not soft

The travel from California all the way to Georgia is quite a trek, so when California Pump N Run took to the floor during the Wallace Prather Memorial Classic point guard Brandon Randolph handled it like the business trip that it was. The kids from the Double Pump program managed to make it all the way to the semifinals before a tough one point loss to Atlanta Xpress, throughout the weekend the buzz around the gym was about how tough the teams guard play was, especially Randolph.

So far this Spring, Randolph has not only been one of the most impressive guards I have seen, but one of the best players overall. He kept his game face on throughout the entire weekend and proved to be one of the most competitive athletes on the court at all times. Every time he touches the ball he is truly a threat. Randolph is a creator if I have ever seen one with the ability and mind set to create for himself or draw defenders in and find teammates at the last minute to keep his assist total up. The 6'2 guard is a dog in the open court, he keeps defenders back pedaling by constantly going directly at them with a hard dribble. At the same time Randolph has a really good feel for when he needs to pull up from the perimeter and not over penetrate. With the size, scoring ability, and strength he possesses, 6'2 185lb, Randolph could slide off the ball and still be productive.

During his junior season at St. Bernard(Playa del Rey, CA) the point guard averaged 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists while being named CIF Southern Section Division 5AA player of the year. Colleges have taken notice as Randolph has received interest from schools in the Pac 12, VCU, Texas A&M, and San Diego St. is on his heels hard.

Eye Catchers from 3rd Session of EYBL

	written by Brian Rogers

Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League third session was under way this past weekend in FRISCO, Texas at the Field house USA. Here are a few eye catchers who caught my attention.

Andrew Wiggins, a 6’7 2014 wing from CIA Bounce, had his grown man game on display all weekend. Wiggins vs. Indy Spiece was phenomenal where he finished with a stat line of 31pts 15 reb, also he attempted 17 free throws in this contest. Wiggins is a special athlete with a great instinct for the game. He has a don't mind working overtime personality that keeps him a step ahead of his competitors.

Kyle Davis is a 6’0 2013 pg for Mac Irvin Fire. Davis is an athletic south paw who pushes the rock a at a very high level. He has the ability to finish above the rim in transition as well as through contact. All weekend long he displayed his high level athleticism against teams such as Louisiana Select where he finished with 10pts, 8asst, 5reb, 3stl and against NY Lightning with 15pts, 10asst, and 2stl. Coaches will be following this windy city prospect all July.

Another intriguing prospect that caught my eye was Oakland Solders 2014 6’7 forward Stanley Johnson. Johnson is a very mature competitor for his age and has the ability to score in a variety of ways whether it is knocking down the mid-range or putting the ball on the floor and utilizing his strength and basketball IQ for easy finishes at or above the rim. Against Indy Spiece he had his game on full throttle where he finished with a impressive 35pts and 10reb in a losing effort. This poised competitor has a bright future and will be a great addition to high major program.

Isaiah Briscoe is a 6’1 2015 physical PG for NJ Playaz. Briscoe is a fearless competitor. He utilizes his strong frame to attacked the rim as well as a developing pull up game. He has all the tools of a promising floor general. A prospect to definitely stay in tuned with.

Thon Maker, a 6’10 skilled forward who competes with the Jackson Tigers, and did I forget to mention he is repping the 2016 class in the prestigious EYBL. Thon has the ability to face up with excellent jab reactions to knock his opponents off balance to make advancement at the rim for scoring opportunities. His slender frame is the only thing holding him back from being a major contributor to his team. He also displayed a soft touch from 15ft as well a developing jump hook. Thon looked comfortable competing on this level and didn’t seem to feel out of place. Maker also had a 19pt 8reb performance against Athletes First. Skies are the limit for Mr. Maker.

Jefferson Settles on the Blue Devils

The Duke Blue Devils only have two recruits for the 2012-2013 season with yesterdays decision from power forward Amile Jefferson to head to Durham. Jefferson, the last player in the Top 25 to choose a school definitely took his time before settling on Duke over Kentucky, NC St., and Ohio State.

Duke came on late in Jefferson's recruitment, not offering him a scholarship until after the early signing period in November. The 6'9 forward listened to what Coach K had to say and studied the make up of the Duke team and felt that he could come in immediately and have success.

The Philadelphia kid will have a chance to come in and be a factor due to a strong motor and work ethic. At the end of the day he projects as a small forward, but right now he has some skill work to do before he reaches that status full time. During his senior year he started to shoot the ball better, mix that in with his ability to be a factor on the glass and he came out averaging a double double at 19 points 10 rebounds. Jefferson fits in at Duke because he's a great competitor and team player, something that is constant in the Blue Devil program.

UNLV Lands A Big Fish

On Saturday the UNLV Running Rebels received some good news when top 10 power forward and McDonald's All American Anthony Bennett made it public that he was choosing the Rebels over the University of Oregon. Bennett who is originally from Canada, played at prep power house Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, Nevada so he won't have to go far to enroll in class. With the recent commitment UNLV has five recruits for the 2012 class that includes Katin Reinhart(Mater Dei HS), Demetris Morant(Bishop Gorman HS), DaQuan Cook(St.Frances Academy), and Pittsburgh transfer Khem Birch.

The 6'7 Bennett will bring more toughness to an already tough UNLV front court as he will play along side junior Mike Moser and the front court will get even scarier when the shot blocker Birch becomes eligible in December. Bennett made his presence felt nationally last summer as he had a coming out party of some sorts in the first session of Nike's EYBL in Virgina. Scouts and coaches knew who Bennett was, but the skill package he displayed over the summer catapulted him onto the top of everyone's rankings. The forward showed that he could dominate on the inside with his power, explosiveness, and a great physical frame. On top of that he proved to be a match up problem, dragging bigger opponents outside where he shoots the three with ease and range. Bennett is yet another outstanding player that is apart of the recent influx of talent from Canada.

This past high school season Trayvon Reed got settled into a new school and played next to one of the countries top big men in Robert Carter. At 6'11, there is plenty expected out of the sophomore and although he is still a work in progress like many young big men Reed's effort is becoming more consistent. Over the weekend at the Wallace Prather Memorial Classic, Reed stepped up his rebounding and was the anchor of his teams defense which helped get his Atlanta Xpress team to the title game.

Still working on his offensive weapons, the young big man is getting stronger and meaner when it comes to finishing plays off at the rim. His hands are much better as he caught a handful of lobs after setting high ball screens and his attitude toward the game seems to be coming around, and the way he runs for a guy his size is something that you just can't teach. Big men mature slower than guards, so just be patient as Reed develops and polishes his skills.
