Freeman Shines/Norcross Survives/Columbia Remains Unbeaten In GA

In day 2 of the Hilton Invitational, I saw everything from great guard performances to one of the worst meltdowns in a high school basketball game.

Harrison's Ryan Blumenthal started off the day with a hot shooting performance against Dr. Phillips in which he scored 28 points, knocking down 5 triples to help his team win 81-76.  GAC pulled away from South Cobb in the second game of the day winning by 20 points.  GAC senior Cole Hobbs put up 23 points in the 60-40 victory.

In what I thought was going to be the game of the day turned out to be a rout when Olympic ran all over Wheeler 69-52.  What I did enjoy was watching Top 10 2013 guard Allerik Freeman of Olympic.  Freeman has added to his game since I last saw him in the EYBL.  He seems to see the floor alot better and did a great job of setting teammates John Brown and Delerece Parks up for easy baskets while getting his too.  This explains why schools are recruiting him at the point as well as the shooting guard position.  Freeman finished with 19 points and 5 rebounds.

The moment of the weekend was not a good one for Charlotte Christian but it helped the host team Norcross survive an upset.  Charlotte Christian led Norcross a majority of the game until one of their players accidently scored for Norcross after an inbounds play with less than 30 seconds left on the clock.  Norcross ended up winning the contest 60-57 and junior Brandon Goodwin led the way with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.

The final game of the night went down to the wire with Columbia and United Faith.  First year United Faith coach and former NBA player Mugsy Bogues drew up the perfect play to get his star guard Braxton Ogbueze a great look at a game winning three that bounced off the back of the rim.  Columbia remained undefeated in the state with the 49-47 win.  One thing I do know is that the Florida commit, Ogbueze, can get his shot on just about anybody as he broke down defenders for midrange jumpers as well as scored coming off screens.  This kid will fit right in with Billy Donovan's system
