Converse Invitational Underway

I hope everyone out there around the country had a wonderful Christmas, but as of yesterday its back to business.  The 1st Annual Converse Invitational got underway with teams from Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, and as far as Alaska.  The event is being hosted by back to back Georgia AAA State Champions Columbia High School and Day 1 showed lots of promise as to what spectators are in store for the rest of the week.  You can catch the rebroadcast of Columbia vs Butler game in the feature section of the site.

Player Of The Day

This was an easy decision as Columbia High's mighty mouse of a point guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen hit the ground running to the tune of 27 points.  Shamsid-Deen wasted no time as he hit early buckets to put his team out in front as they never looked back in a lop sided victory.  The 5'7 point guard was all over the floor making great decisions with the ball in hand as he penetrated right past the Butler defenders mostly creating for himself.  The heady guard had great looks at the basket, making sure he capitalized on every open shot he had.

Clutch Player

A lot of coaches will be passing through the gym to catch a glimpse of an Eagles Landing team that made it all the way to the state Final Four with a team full of sophomores.  They are coming into the tournament with an undefeated record, but were truly tested by a Wenonah team that was playing without star guard Justin Coleman due to transfer rules.  In a game that was dead locked with three minutes remaining, Eagles Landing Jr wing Eric Wortham canned his fourth three of the quarter to give them the lead.  After his team turned the ball over with 20 seconds in the contest Wortham would make a key defensive stop then he secured the rebound.  The 6'5 Jr. calmly knocked down the free throws, retreated back on the defensive end and blocked Wenonah's last attempt at tying the ball game.

**6'7 So. Greg King from ML King was aggressive and mean in the tournaments opening game.  With a pair of strong hands, he powered his way to 20 points terrorizing the rim every chance he got.

**The state of Mississippi always seems to have good players that fly under the radar.  Meridian's Antonio Finley can be put on that list of players.  In a guard heavy rotation, Finley stood out with his ability to shoot the ball from deep.  Finley moved well without the ball, using perfect feet and managing to always have his hands ready to receive the pass.  Even when it looked as if he was just standing around not involved with the offense, all of a sudden Finely would make good hard cuts or fill up up quick enough to receive a pass and let it fly over the out stretched hands of a defender.  His quick release reminded me of former Michigan guard Louis Bullock.
